Heart-Wrenching Discovery: Sixth Victim of Jiribam Abduction Found Floating in River Barak Near Cachar’s Lakhipur
Silchar, Nov 18: The ongoing unrest in the Cachar district intensified on Monday with the discovery of another body in the Barak River at Singerbond, Lakhipur. Authorities confirmed that the deceased, a woman, is likely one of the six individuals abducted by militants from Jiribam, Manipur, on November 11. This discovery aligns with the number of those reportedly abducted from a relief camp in Jiribam, bringing the total count of recovered bodies from local water bodies to six.
Superintendent of Police Mahatta informed The Assam Tribune of their joint efforts with Manipur Police in the ongoing investigation to ascertain the sequence of events and the final fate of those involved. The investigation remains active, as officials seek to uncover the truth behind these tragedies.
Autopsies for the five bodies previously retrieved from the Jiri and Barak Rivers have been conducted at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where the morgue now holds 10 bodies, including those of six family members abducted on the same date by militants.
The discoveries have sparked renewed tension across the district. On Sunday, members of the Meitei community organized a somber candlelight vigil at the foot of the Khudiram Bose statue in Silchar, expressing their grief and anger over the ongoing situation. Earlier that day, two more bodies, those of a woman and a minor, were found near Chirighat, a location roughly 45 minutes from Silchar. These were preceded by the discovery of three bodies near the Jiri and Barak rivers’ confluence on November 15.
The community remains vigilant and concerned as the investigation continues to unfold, highlighting the gravity and impact of the abductions and the swift, tragic aftermath being uncovered in the Cachar district.
