Urgent: Congress Demands Immediate Repoll in Samaguri By-elections Amid Controversy | Guwahati News
Debabrata Saikia, Assam’s opposition leader and senior Congress figure, has formally urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to organize repolling in certain booths of the Samaguri constituency. The constituency was one of five in the state where by-elections occurred on November 13, characterized by violent clashes between Congress and BJP supporters. Saikia highlighted incidents where a BJP worker was killed, and vehicles from both parties were damaged. He accused BJP supporters of voter intimidation and alleged that Congress supporters were barred from accessing some polling booths to favor the BJP candidate.
Through an urgent memorandum sent to the Chief Election Commissioner, Saikia detailed widespread allegations of rigging, booth capturing, and voter intimidation, pointing out specific polling booths, namely numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 193, 194, 195, and 196, where such activities reportedly occurred. He emphasized the need for ECI’s immediate intervention based on these claims. Additionally, Saikia’s memorandum noted that various Congress MLAs had been attacked, and their vehicles damaged near a local BJP office on October 15, the day election announcements were made.
The BJP has denied involvement in any alleged vandalism or voter manipulation, leading to heightened tensions between the two parties in the region. The Congress leader’s call for a repoll aims to address these claims and ensure fair election practices in Samaguri. Saikia has laid the onus on ECI to investigate the allegations thoroughly and conduct repolling if necessary, fostering a transparent electoral process in the affected constituency.
