Thrilling Transformation: Meghalaya CM Unveils Stunningly Redeveloped IGP Point in Shillong’s ‘Re-Imagining Streets’ Initiative
As part of the ‘Re-Imagining Streets’ initiative launched earlier this year by the Meghalaya government, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the redeveloped IGP Point in Shillong. During the unveiling on November 15, Sangma highlighted plans for similar projects throughout the city, emphasizing efforts to enhance Shillong’s overall aesthetic. Although the IGP Point is a relatively small area, the redevelopment signifies a broader initiative to maximize existing city spaces.
The revamped junction aims to improve pedestrian safety and optimize traffic flow, featuring a police booth made from traditional materials that celebrate the Khasi culture. In addition to these developments, Sangma announced the commencement of construction on a new 4-star hotel at Orchid Polo, as part of the government’s strategy to efficiently utilize its assets. He anticipated a significant facelift for Shillong within the next year.
Furthermore, the Integrated Command Centre is nearing completion and will soon be inaugurated. Sangma noted that the redevelopment of IGP Point involved locally sourced materials, aligning with the initiative’s theme.
In support of the project, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbalang Dhar and other senior officials attended the event. Following the inauguration, Sangma and other dignitaries walked from the IGP Point to the Secretariat, enjoying the newly refurbished pedestrian walkways crafted under the Tactical Urbanism Trial.
This ‘Re-Imagining Streets’ initiative reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure by leveraging local materials and cultural elements to create safer and more functional public spaces. As infrastructural projects continue to unfold, the promise of a transformed Shillong is envisioned to boost tourism and improve the quality of urban life for its residents.
