Vibrant Community Concern: Vedasandur Farmers Alarmed by Nightly Misuse of Uzhavar Sandhai Without Protective Wall
Farmers in Dindigul raised pressing concerns at a grievance redress meeting on Friday. Chief among their issues was the usage of the Vedasandur farmers’ market as a nighttime drinking spot due to the lack of a compound wall. Empty liquor bottles scattered around pose risks to morning visitors, prompting officials to promise the speedy construction of a boundary wall. Farmers also expressed frustration over garbage obstructing water channels and called for stringent fines to curb the dumping.
On a positive note, the Ayushman programme was applauded for providing free healthcare to people over 70, though farmers voiced difficulties with online registration. It was assured that special camps at the Collectorate would assist in enrolling eligible individuals.
The menace of wild boars ravaging crops continues to plague farmers in Sirumalai and Ayyalur, with requests for boundary fencing or compensation for losses. While fencing was considered unfeasible, promises were made to devise methods to drive the animals back into reserve forests. Additionally, a complaint was lodged by a farmer from Oddanchatram about land encroachment, with a plea for retrieval of his ancestral property. Published November 15, 2024.
