Northeast’s Exponential Rise: Growth Engine Ignited with 4X Funding Boost, Says Scindia in Tripura

Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced a significant increase in the Central Government’s funding for the North Eastern states, stating a fourfold rise over the past decade compared to the previous Congress regime. Speaking at a press conference in Agartala, Scindia emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming the Northeast into a growth engine.

Highlighting the region’s development, Scindia noted the substantial budget increase from Rs 24,000 crore to approximately Rs 1,03,000 crore since 2014. In infrastructure, he pointed out that the Modi government has constructed more than 5,000 km of National Highways in the past decade, compared to 10,000 km built over the previous 65 years. Railway connectivity, limited to three states currently, aims to encompass all Northeastern states within the next 2-3 years.

The aviation sector also witnessed significant expansion, with the number of airports rising from nine to 17, addressing states that previously had none. Scindia praised Tripura’s progress under Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, highlighting an increase in the GSDP to Rs 90,000 crore and a 15% rise in per capita GDP. Tax devolution funds for Tripura surged from Rs 8,900 crore (2004-2014) to Rs 47,160 crore (2014-2024), and Grant-in-Aid increased from Rs 31,285 crore to Rs 62,000 crore.

Under the 4G saturation project, Scindia revealed plans for 119 towers in Tripura, with 90 already installed, aiming for completion by June. Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Tripura are included in this initiative, with an allocation of Rs 500 crore for these states.

Through these developments, the Central Government underscores its commitment to enhancing infrastructure and economic growth across the Northeast.
