Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and his National People’s Power (NPP) party scored a significant victory in the recent snap general election, solidifying the new president’s left-wing mandate. This election outcome provides Dissanayake with increased legislative power to address poverty and corruption amid Sri Lanka’s recovery from a severe financial crisis.
Dissanayake, previously an outsider in a political landscape dominated by family dynasties, first triumphed in the presidential election in September. Initially, his Marxist-leaning NPP coalition held just three of the 225 parliamentary seats. This lack of representation prompted Dissanayake to dissolve the existing parliament, seeking a stronger mandate.
The NPP emerged as the dominant force in Thursday’s election, capturing 107 seats with nearly 62% of the vote, totaling approximately 6.8 million votes. This result positions them over the parliamentary majority threshold, and a two-thirds majority seems achievable.
Sri Lanka’s parliament consists of 196 directly elected members from 22 constituencies and 29 seats allotted based on the nationwide proportional vote. Dissanayake emphasized the importance of this election as a crucial moment for Sri Lanka, noting a shift in the country’s political culture since his September win. His expectations for forming a robust parliament accompanied muted celebrations, marked only by a few NPP loyalists lighting fireworks in Colombo’s outskirts.
Over 17 million Sri Lankans were eligible to vote for a new five-year legislative term, with a record 690 political entities contesting across 22 districts. The opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya party, led by Sajith Premadasa, secured 28 seats with 18% of the vote. Meanwhile, the New Democratic Front, supported by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, managed only three seats.
