Unveiling the Dhubri Corruption Scandal: Shocking Allegations Rock MGNREGA Scheme 2023-24
In Dhubri district, significant corruption allegations have surfaced regarding the implementation of the MGNREGA scheme for 2023-24 under the Panchayat and Rural Development Department. An order issued on October 22 by Jalli Keerthi, the commissioner of the department, initiated the release of Rs 5.44 crore for pending material liabilities in 14 development blocks, including the Gauripur Development Block.
However, credible sources report substantial misappropriation of these funds within the Gauripur Development Block, led by Sanjit Bharali, the Block Development Officer. Allegations suggest that despite the release of funds, only Rs 10 lakh remains deposited, with rampant corruption and irregularities noted in many projects.
Adding to the grievances, vendors have expressed dissatisfaction over unpaid dues from the 2020-21 financial year, further implicating Bharali in severe malpractices. Residents of the Gauripur area have formally complained to the Assistant Chief Secretary of the State’s Panchayat and Rural Development Department, accusing Bharali of extensive corruption.
Specific accusations detail fraudulent billing amounting to Rs 10 lakh, purportedly covering administrative expenses of the 15th Finance Commission, which included substandard repairs at Howrarpar Panchayat and a poorly executed boundary wall for Chutka village’s graveyard under the commission.
The community is actively calling for a comprehensive investigation into these allegations, urging the authorities to scrutinize the execution of both MGNREGA projects in Gauripur and others funded by the 15th Finance Commission, to address the apparent embezzlement and ensure accountability within the system.
