Urgent Plea: NEHU Faculty Urge Governor’s Intervention Amid Escalating Meghalaya Protests
The ongoing protests and indefinite hunger strike by students at North-Eastern Hills University (NEHU) have reached their fourth day, prompting faculty members to request intervention from Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar to resolve the escalating crisis. The turmoil has disrupted operations at the university, impacting nearly 5,000 students.
Students have been staging a hunger strike outside the office of Vice-Chancellor PS Shukla, demanding his removal along with the dismissal of the “incompetent” registrar and deputy registrar. The protests have been marked by the burning of effigies of these officials.
The North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association, led by President Prof. Lakhon Kma, briefed Governor Vijayashankar about the situation, highlighting the considerable loss of trust in Shukla’s leadership among students, teachers, and non-teaching staff. The Governor, expressing concern over the protests, emphasized the importance of students attending their classes and directed all stakeholders to submit suggestions for resolving the crisis.
In response to demands, Vice-Chancellor Shukla announced the appointment of a Pro Vice-Chancellor for both the Tura and Shillong campuses by the end of the month, in accordance with university ordinances. He also urged students to engage in dialogue and end their hunger strike, stressing the importance of communication in finding a resolution.
Tensions at NEHU heightened with the declaration of a complete campus lockdown by the students. The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has escalated demands, calling for the ousting of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, the appointment of a Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Tura campus, and prompt student elections.
Governor Vijayashankar has been involved in talks to mediate the situation, receiving inputs from faculty members and urging collaborative efforts to quell the unrest and return the university to normalcy.
