Devastating Blow: Hurricane Rafael Halts Gulf Energy Operations, Impacting Over 2 Million Barrels of Oil Production
Hurricane Rafael has significantly impacted energy production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, with over 23% of crude oil and 10% of natural gas output suspended, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE). The hurricane, with winds reaching 100 mph, has led energy firms to evacuate personnel from numerous offshore platforms. This has resulted in the suspension of 408,830 barrels per day of oil and nearly 201 million cubic feet of natural gas, according to BSEE’s Friday report. The National Hurricane Center noted that Rafael is lingering in the central Gulf, with expectations of it weakening but continuing to endanger the region’s energy infrastructure.
Projections from Earth Science Associates suggest the storm may reduce offshore production by approximately 2 million barrels of oil and 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas. In response, major oil companies such as BP, Chevron, Equinor, and Shell have evacuated employees and halted some operations. Occidental Petroleum reported it is adhering to safety protocols at its offshore sites. The resumption of these facilities is likely to take several days as companies monitor the storm’s progress and evaluate conditions for safely returning personnel.
In other news, the Colorado Avalanche are set to face another formidable NHL team after a narrow 1-0 loss to Winnipeg on Thursday night. They will host the red-hot Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, who are currently on an impressive eight-game winning streak. During this run, Carolina has been averaging 4.75 goals per game, consistently scoring at least four goals in their last seven matches. The Hurricanes’ visit to Denver marks the start of a three-game road trip for the team, which is enjoying the best streak in the league. (With Inputs from Reuters)
