Arunachal Flash Flood: Teacher Recovered, Search Continues for 4
The body of a missing school teacher was recovered on Wednesday, June 24, as rescue teams intensified efforts to trace four others after a flash flood and massive debris flow hit the NEEPCO Colony in Keyi Panyor district, Arunachal Pradesh. The disaster was triggered by intense rainfall and a large debris flow in the Panyor River catchment, officials said.
The deceased was identified as 35-year-old Nirmala Gupta, a teacher at Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV), NEEPCO, Yazali. Her body was found during ongoing search-and-rescue operations launched immediately after the incident.
Four people remain unaccounted for: 13-year-old Elesh Marak, 30-year-old Balari Marak, 46-year-old Tao Anjina and Sourav Kumar. Authorities report that several houses were washed away, critical infrastructure was damaged and multiple families have been displaced.
Search efforts are being conducted by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, Fire and Emergency Services and the district administration, with operations extending into downstream areas. During the response, rescuers pulled Bishu Sinha to safety from the Yazali reservoir and saved a Geological Survey of India (GSI) scientist from the Itanagar–Hoj–Yazali highway stretch.
The monsoon-linked event has severely disrupted connectivity across six western Arunachal districts — Upper Subansiri, Kamle, Lower Subansiri, Kurung Kumey, Kra Daadi and Keyi Panyor — as major landslides blocked sections of the Kimin route and the Itanagar–Hoj–Yazali National Highway. Connectivity through the Hoj bridge and the junction linking Pakke Kessang and East Kameng districts has also been affected.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the state Highway Department have deployed teams to clear debris and restore road links. Authorities have urged residents to avoid non-essential travel, remain vigilant and follow official advisories while rescue and restoration work continues.
