Explosive Clashes Erupt in Tinsukia: Emotional Protests Demand Tribal Status Recognition
A protest organized by the All Moran Students’ Union and the All Assam Motok Youth Students’ Federation turned violent as participants demanded tribal status recognition for the Moran-Motok community. Originally a peaceful assembly, the situation escalated when security forces intervened, citing the need for preventative measures, and used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, allegedly to prevent the burning of effigies.
Serious allegations have emerged against TSI Shankar Das of Tinsukia Sadar Police Station, with the student unions, representing key factions of the Moran and Motok communities, accusing him of excessive force and inappropriate actions. In response, both unions have issued an ultimatum to the authorities, demanding immediate disciplinary action against Das.
They have warned that failure to comply with their demands within 24 hours will lead to a district-wide bandh (shutdown) in Tinsukia on November 10th, protesting what they describe as a violation of their right to peaceful assembly.
In related news, Amit Shah reaffirmed the BJP’s opposition to minority reservation, cautioning Rahul Gandhi on the matter.
