Historic Surge: 12 Influential Political Leaders Unite with Congress in Manipur – Northeast News
In a significant political shift in Manipur, twelve leaders from various parties joined the opposition Congress on Friday. The new members include former MLAs Kh Loken Singh and Z Kikhonbou Newmai, four past chairpersons of the ADC Tamenglong, and six prominent social workers. The induction ceremony was held at Congress Bhawan in Imphal, where former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, state Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh, and Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam welcomed the leaders.
Addressing the new members, Okram Ibobi Singh criticized the BJP’s governance, attributing societal unrest and public miseries in Manipur and nationwide to their policies. He highlighted the consequences of BJP’s rule, which he said led to divisions under the pretext of religion, language, and identity. Reflecting on the 2017 Assembly elections, Singh pointed out that although Congress emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats, BJP formed the government after securing just 21 seats, allegedly due to central influence on the governor.
Singh accused the BJP of undermining democratic principles to gain power, calling it a direct defiance of the people’s electoral mandate. His sentiments were echoed by Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh in a post on X, emphasizing a shift in Manipur’s political landscape. He noted that after Congress won both Lok Sabha seats in the recent April-May elections, there has been a continuous influx of leaders into the party. These changes, he suggested, might be why the Prime Minister has not visited the state.
As Manipur grapples with political realignments, Congress appears to be strengthening its foothold, capitalizing on growing dissatisfaction with the BJP’s leadership in the region.
