Shocking Twist: Shreyas Iyer Parts Ways with KKR After Failed Salary Talks!
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) may soon be searching for a new leader as Shreyas Iyer is reportedly set to leave the franchise despite guiding them to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) championship earlier this year. Iyer, who joined KKR in the 2022 IPL auction for INR 12.25 crore, is among the select group of five Indian captains to have secured an IPL title. According to Cricbuzz, Iyer’s ongoing negotiations for a higher salary have stalled, resulting in his likely absence from KKR’s player retention list.
However, the team’s story with Iyer may not be over. KKR could still retain their key player by utilizing the Right to Match (RTM) card at the upcoming mega auction, anticipated in the last week of November. Despite this, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh remains optimistic about Iyer’s retention, suggesting that he is among the six players KKR should keep, alongside Phil Salt, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, and Rinku Singh.
Since joining KKR, Iyer has made significant contributions, amassing 752 runs, including five half-centuries, across 28 matches. Although he missed the IPL 2023 season due to injury, with Nitish Rana stepping in as captain, his overall IPL career boasts 3,127 runs at a strike rate of 127.48 in 115 matches, also representing Delhi Capitals prior to KKR.
With Iyer’s exceptional track record, several teams eyeing a new captain are expected to target him in the upcoming auctions, potentially sparking a fierce bidding war.
