VC Braces for Intense Scrutiny Amid Explosive Allegations of Illegality
Pressure is escalating on the Vice Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, to dismiss Registrar (Retd.) Colonel Omkar Singh and other alleged illegal appointees. Speaking to students protesting outside his office, Prof. Shukla expressed readiness to face any inquiry regarding the allegations and stated that terminations must follow established rules. He urged students to provide evidence of wrongdoing against the Registrar or Deputy Registrar.
Communication has also been sent to top government officials about these appointments, and Prof. Shukla awaits official guidance. He appealed for the reopening of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar’s chambers, which are blocked by protesters, causing operational disruptions and delayed salaries.
The NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the KSU NEHU Unit have given an ultimatum to the Vice Chancellor to terminate the appointees by November 4, threatening further actions otherwise. NEHUSU criticized the appointment of Col. Singh, highlighting his lack of academic administrative experience, and pointed to significant issues during his oversight of the CUET Undergraduate examination in 2024.
Concerns were also raised over favoritism in appointments, with specific reference to Amit Gupta, whose sudden qualification as Deputy Registrar in 2023 raised questions about the hiring process’s integrity. The appointment of Dr. Debashish Chowdhary, surpassing the age limit for his role, was also criticized.
The associations are also demanding the appointment of Pro Vice Chancellors for NEHU’s Shillong and Tura campuses, citing administrative inefficiencies due to their absence.
The Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association (MeTTA-NEHU) has backed these demands, citing irregularities and incompetence among the current appointees and supporting the call for dismissals to restore administrative order at NEHU.
