Exciting Alliance: BJP and UPPL Announce Dynamic Candidates for Pivotal Assam Bypolls
In the upcoming bypolls in Assam, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), have filed nominations for three assembly seats. The BJP has put forward Diganta Ghatowar for the Behali seat to face Congress’s Jayanta Barah. In Dholai, Nihar Ranjan Das will compete against Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha from Congress. The Samaguri seat will witness a clash between BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarma and Congress’s Tanzil Hussain, with Sarma submitting his nomination papers on the last filing day. Meanwhile, UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma has entered the race for the Sidli seat, contending against Sanjib Warle from Congress. The Asom Gana Parishad has also nominated Deeptimoyee Choudhury for the Bongaigaon seat, pitting her against Congress candidate Brajenjit Sinha.
Manoj Baruah, the BJP’s chief spokesperson, expressed confidence in the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) prospects, asserting likely victories in Behali, Dholai, Sidli, and Bongaigaon. However, he acknowledged that Samaguri might present challenges due to its demographic composition. Baruah criticized the opposition, particularly Congress, for their lack of cohesion and strategic unity, particularly referencing the discord over the Behali seat nomination.
The internal discord within the opposition came to light as Congress nominated Jayanta Bora for Behali, undermining the opposition’s united front, which supported a CPI-ML candidate. This move has sparked criticism from the Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha (ASOM), which vowed to contest future elections independently of Congress. They remain committed to challenging BJP’s administration, despite these current fissures.
Overall, the upcoming bypolls in Assam are marked by strategic alliances and electoral ambitions, with the BJP and its allies aiming to capitalize on perceived opposition disunity and internal conflicts.
