NHAI’s Unyielding Decision: Maradu Residents Face Disappointment in Toll Exemption Battle
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has declined Ernakulam District Collector N.S.K Umesh’s request to temporarily exempt Maradu residents from paying tolls at the Kumbalam toll plaza. This request emerged from a meeting led by Collector Umesh, prompted by the month-long closures of the Kundannoor and Alexander Parambithara Bridges for resurfacing. The closure, in effect since October 15, necessitates commuters to detour through the toll plaza for access to West Kochi via Edakochi. Despite the inconvenience to the residents, the NHAI Project Director explained that offering a toll exemption was not technically feasible. This situation highlights the broader logistical challenges amid essential infrastructure upgrades in the region. Published on October 22, 2024.
