Nagaland Honors Fallen Officers on Police Commemoration Day
Kohima witnessed a solemn ceremony on October 21 as Nagaland joined the nation in observing Police Commemoration Day. The event, held at Police Headquarters (PHQ) Kohima, featured a ceremonial parade led by Nagaland’s Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma. He, along with other officers, paid homage to 214 police personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the last year across India.
DGP Sharma emphasized the day’s significance, highlighting it as not only a time of mourning but also a celebration of the bravery and selfless dedication of police officers. He called for a renewed commitment to serving and safeguarding the nation, underscoring the officers’ role in ensuring peace and facilitating economic progress.
Amid these tributes, four brave martyrs from the Nagaland Police were particularly remembered for their sacrifices under challenging circumstances. Beyond honoring those who have fallen, the DGP recognized the ongoing dedication of Nagaland’s police force. Praising their commitment, he noted that officers often forgo personal celebrations to maintain public safety, exemplified by their seamless execution of two local elections and the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections under demanding conditions.
The history of Police Commemoration Day dates to October 21, 1959, when a CRPF patrol led by DCIO Karam Singh was ambushed by Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Aksai Chin. The encounter resulted in the deaths of ten personnel, whose bravery has since been commemorated annually following a 1960 resolution by India’s state police chiefs.
This day serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing sacrifices made by police personnel nationwide in their mission to protect the nation, ensuring a secure environment for all citizens.
