Breaking Barriers: Exciting Endorsement from Other Tribes for Bold 10% Job Quota Initiative
NONGPOH, Oct 14: A push for greater inclusivity in Meghalaya’s reservation policy has gained momentum as Mayralborn Syiem, UDP’s Nongpoh MLA, recommends doubling the job quota from 5% to 10% for marginalized tribes, including the Karbi, Rabha, and Hajong communities in Ri-Bhoi district. This proposal, submitted to the Expert Committee on the Reservation Policy, has received strong backing from leaders of these tribes and communities, such as the Marmain Area Youth Upliftment (MAYU).
Diren Klein and Komin Terang, prominent Karbi leaders, expressed gratitude towards Syiem for his efforts to uplift the backward communities in Meghalaya. They emphasized the need to review the reservation framework, citing NITI Aayog data that underscores the socio-economic challenges faced by these tribes. They argue that a revised quota of 10% to 15% is deemed essential for ensuring the progress of educated youth from marginalized tribes, who often struggle due to the scarcity of reserved government job opportunities.
In addition to advocating an increased job reservation, Syiem also proposes restricting District Selection Committee (DSC) posts to local candidates. This suggestion aims to combat the issue of outsiders securing district-level jobs at the expense of local youth. The tribal leaders further assert that prioritizing local talent would significantly empower the districts and enhance the state’s economy as a whole.
Reiterating the urgency of these adjustments, Karbi leaders caution that the neglect of any community could result in setbacks for the entire state and nation. They express their hope that the Expert Committee will give serious consideration to Syiem’s proposals, which align closely with the core intentions of the Reservation Policy, aiming for equitable development and upliftment across all societal segments.
