A tragic incident unfolded at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, where 28-year-old PhD student Pragati Kharya allegedly died by suicide on Thursday. The student, pursuing a PhD in Earth Sciences, was found hanging in her hostel room, D-116, located in hall number 4. The incident, reported by PTI quoting police officials, marks the fourth such case at the institute over the past year.
The discovery was made on Thursday noon, when Kharya’s hostel mates alerted IIT Kanpur authorities, who then informed the police. The institution expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Kharya, who joined IIT Kanpur in 2021, describing her as a promising young researcher. A statement from the institute extended condolences to her family and friends, while waiting for the police investigation results to uncover more details about her death.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Rajesh Kumar Singh, the police were informed of the incident around noon. Assistant CP (Kalyanpur) Abhishek Pandey stated that officers found Kharya’s room locked from the inside. Upon entry, they found Kharya’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. A suicide note was discovered in her room, reportedly absolving anyone from responsibility for her decision. A mobile phone was also recovered as part of the investigation.
Kharya’s family has reached IIT Kanpur, and her body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. Earlier cases of suicide at IIT Kanpur include Priyanka Jaiswal, a 29-year-old chemical engineering PhD student, who allegedly took her own life in January, and Vikas Kumar Meena, a 31-year-old M.Tech student, who hanged himself after facing course continuation issues. In December, 34-year-old postdoctoral researcher Pallavi Chilka reportedly died by suicide.
Investigations are underway as the community mourns the loss of yet another promising academic in this sequence of heartrending events.
