Nagaland Government Halts Auction of Rare Naga Artefact in UK

Kohima | October 10 – A significant intervention by the Nagaland State Government has successfully stopped the auction of a rare Naga artefact in the United Kingdom. Nagaland’s Minister for Power & Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, announced that the State’s prompt actions, including a strong objection letter from Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to the Union Minister of External Affairs, were pivotal in halting the sale of the artefact named Nagaska.
Scheduled for auction on October 9, the artefact was removed from the auction list following the State Government’s efforts. Minister Kenye emphasized Chief Minister Rio’s swift reaction and unwavering commitment, which proved instrumental in reversing the decision. He acknowledged the role of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) and assured that the government would assist in repatriating Naga cultural heritage. Kenye clarified that these artefacts are the rightful property of the Naga people, not contraband or illegal items, and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to safeguarding Naga cultural heritage.
The State Government assured adherence to international norms in the repatriation process. Reports indicate that Swan auction house in Tetsworth, Oxfordshire, withdrew a ‘Naga Human Skull’ from a live online sale, responding to the outcry from India. Tom Keane, the auction house owner, cited respect for all involved as the reason for the withdrawal, despite the legality of the sale.
The artefact, with an opening bid of GBP 2,100 (approximately Rs 2.30 lakh) and an anticipated sale price of up to GBP 4,000 (around Rs 4.39 lakh), was said to interest collectors of anthropology and tribal cultures. Its history traces back to 19th-century Belgian architect Francois Coppens’ collection. The proactive steps taken by the Nagaland government underscore its resolve to reclaim and protect Naga heritage.
