Tragic Loss: Suspended Police Constable Dies by Suicide in Erode
A 34-year-old police constable, P. Selvakumar, stationed at Ammapettai in Erode district, died by suicide on October 7, 2024, following his suspension for allegedly assaulting a lorry driver and extorting money while intoxicated. A viral video surfaced showing lorry drivers confronting Selvakumar at the Chinnapallam police check-post, where he reportedly demanded ₹2,000 to avoid filing a case against them on October 2. Bhavani Deputy Superintendent of Police A. Chandrasekar investigated and reported the incident to Superintendent G. Jawahar, who then suspended Selvakumar. His family reported that he had been depressed since the suspension and died by suicide at his home in Umareddiyur.
Following his death, family members and relatives protested on the Ammapettai-Mettur Road, demanding the arrest of those who allegedly threatened Selvakumar and recorded the incident. The protest disrupted traffic but allowed emergency vehicles and school buses to pass until it ended at 9 p.m. after discussions with local officials. The postmortem is scheduled to be conducted on October 8, 2024, at the Government Erode Medical College and Hospital in Perundurai.
