Historic Triumph: NC-Congress Alliance Celebrates Joyous Victory in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Election!
The National Conference-Congress alliance is poised to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir as election trends on October 8 show the coalition leading in 51 out of 90 assembly seats, surpassing the 46-seat majority threshold. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ahead in 26 seats.
Vote counting started at 8 a.m. and marks the culmination of a significant electoral process aimed at re-establishing an elected government in Jammu and Kashmir, absent since June 2018. The previous government, a coalition between the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the BJP, fell apart, leading to the abrogation of Article 370 and the loss of the region’s special status.
These assembly elections, the first since 2014, were conducted in three stages: 24 seats on September 18, 26 on September 25, and 40 on October 1. Notably, this is the first election since Jammu and Kashmir’s reorganization into two union territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh—in 2019.
Key political players include the Congress-National Conference alliance, the PDP, and the BJP. Speculation persists about post-election coalitions, with National Conference president Farooq Abdullah suggesting a potential alliance with Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP to secure a governing majority if required.
Separately, Abdullah expressed strong opposition to the central government’s plan to allow the Lieutenant Governor to nominate five members to the reserved seats in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, increasing the assembly’s size to 95 and raising the majority requirement to 48. He warned of a legal challenge in the Supreme Court if the BJP-led government moves forward with this decision.
