Unleashing Bollywood’s Moody Master: The Riveting Power of Drawn-Out, Deadly Dialogues
New Delhi, Oct 8: Celebrated Urdu poet Jigar Moradabadi could hardly have imagined that a line from his ghazal, “Hamko mita sake ye zamaane mein dam nahi Hamse zamana khud hai zamaane se ham nahi,” would gain immortal fame as a Bollywood dialogue. Raaj Kumar, an unlikely icon with his lean frame, unconventional looks, and distinct diction, made this couplet his own while playing an idealistic professor in the 1981 thriller ‘Bulundi’. This sher became one of his signature one-liners, celebrated during his nearly fifty-year film career.
Raaj Kumar, born Kulbhushan Pandit on October 8, 1926, in Balochistan, and once a Bombay police Sub-Inspector, was a cinematic maverick. Known for his unique speaking style, flamboyant attire, and discerning choice of co-stars, he had a reputation for turning down roles for unusual reasons. Notably, it is said he rejected the iconic role in ‘Zanjeer’ due to the director’s hair oil or, amusingly, his distaste for the director’s face.
Yet, filmmaker B.R. Chopra praised him as a delight to work with, valuing his dedication and preparation. Raaj Kumar astounded audiences with his portrayal of varied roles—from a hapless peasant to a resolute police officer—demonstrating his versatility across genres.
His film journey began after persuasion from friends, despite initial struggles, with his debut in ‘Rangeeli’ (1952) going unnoticed. Recognition came with roles in ‘Mother India’ (1957), ‘Naushervan-e-Adil’ (1957), and ‘Paigham’ (1959). He rose to stardom with ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai’ (1960), winning a Filmfare Award for ‘Dil Ek Mandir’ (1963), and triumphing with the blockbuster ‘Waqt’ (1965).
Despite later projects fading, Raaj Kumar’s particular brand of dialogue delivery in films like ‘Saudagar’ (1991) cemented his legacy as a commanding force in Bollywood. His unforgettable presence remains a testament to his iconic status in Indian cinema.
