Passionate Villagers Unite in a Powerful Protest Against Dam in Siang
Guwahati: On Saturday, over 600 villagers in Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh protested against a proposed 12,500-megawatt hydropower project. The protest took place in Geku village, opposing the preliminary survey for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. Demonstrators voiced their disapproval of the initiative, directing their slogans at state Chief Minister Pema Khandu and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). Despite the spirited turnout, the protest remained peaceful with no reported incidents of unrest.
The NHPC has identified three potential sites for the project in Upper Siang and Siang districts, with ongoing surveys at Ugeng, between Parong and Deging, and between Ditte-Dime and Geku. The proposed hydropower project has sparked local concern, reflecting a broader debate over development and environmental impact in the region.
