Devastating Earth-Cutting Activities Wreak Havoc on Homes and Crops in Ri-Bhoi Village
NONGPOH, Oct 5: Families in Nongspung B village, Ri-Bhoi district, are grappling with severe challenges following landslides and soil erosion that have ravaged their homes and crops. These environmental disruptions result from extensive earth-cutting activities carried out by Donalad Srinate in the region. The affected households include those of Premika Sungoh, Lijanta Sungoh, Kerning Sungoh, Manar Suting, and Wompher Dkhar.
The Headman of the village, Phelimon Tongper, along with Riton Sumer, raised their voices to the media, revealing that complaints against the illegal land excavation had been lodged at the Pilangkata Outpost previously. Despite these reports, the authorities have not taken any decisive action to mitigate the recurring issue, which is exacerbated each rainy season.
Efforts to engage with the landowner responsible for the harmful excavation have led to a commitment to clear the displaced soil invading homes and village areas. However, no compensation for the extensive damage to residences and agricultural lands has been forthcoming. The situation has forced some families to temporarily relocate as their mud-laden homes are no longer livable.
In response to this ongoing crisis, village authorities have announced plans to implement stricter measures against the illegal excavation activities. They are actively calling on the government to intervene, with an urgent appeal to the Forest Department to sanction immediate corrective actions. The community’s growing distress underscores the pressing need for a sustainable solution to the detrimental earth-cutting operations that threaten the well-being of Nongspung B’s residents.
