Shocking Crackdown: 23 Boats Seized in Mangaluru’s Illegal Sand Mining Operation
In a significant crackdown on illegal sand mining, officials from the Department of Mining and Geology conducted a raid in Mangaluru taluk, seizing sand and 23 boats, valued at approximately ₹46 lakhs. The operation, which took place on Saturday, October 5, 2024, targeted an unauthorized mining site, responding to numerous complaints from local residents about resource overexploitation in the Nethravati River, particularly around Valachhil, Maripalla, and Pudu. Assistant Commissioner Harshavardhan revealed that the boat owners lacked the necessary documents. The confiscated boats are currently stationed at Adyar Katte near the police station as investigations continue. Authorities also noted the presence of other illegal mining sites along the Gurupur River.
