Guwahati Official Arrested for Accepting Bribe: 51st Corruption Crackdown of the Year
In a significant anti-corruption operation, the Assam Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption apprehended a government official in the Kamrup district on Saturday. Subodh Das, the sub-divisional officer of the territorial building subdivision of the Public Works and National Highway Department (PWD&NH), was caught accepting a bribe in his office located in Mirza, Kamrup district.
The bribe was meant to expedite the processing of the complainant’s bills, according to Surendra Kumar, ADGP (Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption). The incident was shared on X, with a statement confirming Das’s arrest for accepting the bribe to facilitate bill processing.
This operation marks the directorate’s 51st successful trap this year in their vigorous campaign against corruption. Earlier, on September 2, the directorate had arrested an executive engineer from the irrigation department for a similar offense, marking their 50th arrest in 2024.
In related developments, broader anti-corruption efforts are evident as investigations into the Kerala Cricket League revealed that Chhattisgarh-based individuals bribed players to sabotage matches. Offers of Rs 1 lakh per wide or no-ball bowled were made, and investigations are ongoing with police utilizing social media to identify those involved. Thiruvananthapuram police are also probing claims from two cricket players who were promised up to Rs 5 lakh to manipulate the outcomes of specific matches through Instagram and WhatsApp communications.
In all, these incidents underscore a robust stance against corruption across various sectors, reflecting a commitment to integrity and accountability.
