Abdullah Harnekar, a 10-year-old boy suffering from severe aplastic anaemia, has successfully undergone a life-saving haploidentical bone marrow transplant at Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital in Mumbai. Abdullah, diagnosed with a condition where his bone marrow failed to produce essential blood cells, required regular blood and platelet transfusions. Faced with a critical decision between immunosuppressive therapy and bone marrow transplantation, his family chose the latter despite the absence of a full donor match.
Abdullah’s elder brother, identified as a half-match donor, offered a viable solution. Under the care of Dr. Priti Mehta, a senior haematology oncology and bone marrow transplant consultant, Abdullah underwent a T-replete stem cell transplant. This economical procedure eliminated the need for expensive T depletion kits, significantly reducing costs for the family. Dr. Mehta and her team meticulously managed Abdullah’s treatment, ensuring a smooth transplant process.
Dr. Mehta highlighted the feasibility of haploidentical transplants even without a full match, emphasizing that every child has a potential donor. She noted, "We provide life-saving solutions at a lower cost while maintaining high standards of care." Abdullah’s recovery has been remarkable; he was discharged after a month in the hospital and has shown no signs of graft vs. host disease in the two months following his return home.
His father expressed immense gratitude, saying, "We were scared and uncertain about the future. But Dr. Mehta and her team gave us hope and guided us through every step of the process." This case underscores the importance of advanced medical treatments like haploidentical transplants, which can be performed both economically and successfully. Dr. Mehta stressed, "With proper training and resources, we can offer the best possible care to every child, ensuring they live healthy lives."
