Shocking Scandal: Chhattisgarh Official Suspended After Newly Printed Schoolbooks Sold as Scrap
In a significant development, the Chhattisgarh state government has taken stern action following the discovery of schoolbooks meant for free distribution being sold as scrap. The government has suspended Prem Prakash Sharma, the General Manager of the Chhattisgarh Textbook Corporation. The books, intended for distribution in the 2024-25 academic session, were found at a recycling center, triggering a preliminary investigation led by Additional Chief Secretary Renu Pillai. The inquiry indicated that the textbooks had been sold to a scrap dealer, pointing to negligence on Sharma’s part.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, upon learning about the incident, immediately ordered Sharma’s suspension under Rule 9 of the Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1966. Sharma, a State Administrative Service officer, was ironically part of the panel investigating these allegations. The state government, in its suspension order accessed by Indian Express, highlighted the gravity of the situation, indicating a serious breach of duty.
Chief Minister Sai reiterated his administration’s commitment to good governance and zero tolerance towards corruption. In recent meetings, he emphasized that any negligence would face severe repercussions. Former Congress MLA Vikas Upadhyay had previously alleged that the textbooks for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Chhattisgarh Textbook Corporation were being sold as scrap at low prices. The Congress Party has called for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a retired judge, alleging corruption in the textbook printing process.
This incident raises serious questions about administrative oversight within the Chhattisgarh Textbook Corporation. The swift action by the state government underscores its resolve to maintain accountability and integrity in public service.
