Brussels Diamond League Finale: Julien Alfred and Jakob Ingebrigtsen Shine
Brussels: Olympic 100 metres champion, Julien Alfred, capped off a flawless season at the Diamond League series finale on Friday night. Alfred, hailing from St Lucia, led most of the women’s 100 metres race, narrowly finishing ahead of Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith with a time of 10.88 seconds. In a surprising turn, American Sha’Carri Richardson, who secured silver in Paris, only managed an eighth-place finish.
Norwegian star Jakob Ingebrigtsen redeemed his fourth-place hiccup in Paris with a commanding win in the men’s 1,500 metres. Ingebrigtsen broke away from rivals in the final 200 metres, leaving Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot and Olympic champion Cole Hocker trailing in second and third respectively.
Olympic pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis showcased his dominance by securing victory with only two jumps. He went on to set a new Brussels meet record by clearing 6.11 metres, after his competitors failed to clear 5.92 metres.
Other notable performances included Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, who won the women’s 400 metres in 49.45 seconds, and Mary Moraa of Kenya, who clinched the women’s 800 metres with a season-best time of 1:56.56. In the men’s 100 metres, Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake crossed the line first in 9.93 seconds, edging out American Christian Coleman, while Fred Kerley took third.
Charles Dobson of Britain was a surprise victor in the men’s 400 metres, outpacing Grenada’s Kirani James and Zambian Olympic bronze medallist Muzala Samukonga with a powerful late burst.
