Urgent: Curfew Reimposed in Manipur Amidst Powerful Women’s Protests
Imphal: Authorities in Manipur’s Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur districts have tightened curfew measures following significant protests by women. The unrest was triggered by the death of a nine-month pregnant woman who sustained critical injuries from tear gas shells during student protests earlier this week.
The tragic incident led to the stillbirth of the 34-year-old woman’s unborn child, while she remains in critical condition with a severe intracranial bleed at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal. Protesters have accused the authorities of “murdering” the unborn child and severely injuring the mother.
Initially, the District Magistrates of Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal had relaxed the curfew for 11 hours on Saturday. However, these relaxations were revoked as tensions escalated. Security measures have been bolstered in the affected districts, with increased patrols by paramilitary and other forces.
The region has been marred by a series of violent incidents in recent weeks, resulting in at least 12 deaths and over 20 injuries. In light of the growing violence, mobile Internet services were suspended in five districts on September 10. Moreover, all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and technical institutes, have been closed until September 14.
The situation remains volatile, with authorities on high alert to prevent further escalation.
