Ranoj Pegu’s Passionate Call: Prioritize Skills Education Now to Transform Future on ASSEB
Guwahati, Sept. 13: The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) officially commenced its operations with the swearing-in of its Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and board members on Friday at the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) office in Guwahati. The ceremony, attended by State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, marked the integration of SEBA and AHSEC into the new board.
Ramesh Chand Jain, the former Chairman of SEBA, took the oath as ASSEB Chairman, while Rukma Gohain Barua was sworn in as Vice-Chairman. During the event, Minister Pegu outlined ASSEB’s objectives, emphasizing its role in overseeing secondary education, including conducting exams, issuing certificates, and developing the curriculum.
Minister Pegu highlighted the board’s focus on integrating STEM and skills education within the secondary school system. "A new SOP for skills education has been published. We aim to merge general education with vocational training to enhance employability," stated Pegu. He mentioned efforts to revive existing higher secondary and multipurpose schools across various districts to enhance vocational and skills-based education.
Additionally, Pegu emphasized the importance of collaboration between schools, colleges, and industries to inspire and prepare students for entrepreneurial ventures. "Schools must enter into MoUs with other institutions and industries to provide skills-based training and education, thereby making our students employable," he said.
Addressing concerns about school infrastructure, Pegu noted the need for approximately 1,500 additional schools to achieve zero drop-outs, beyond the current 4,500 schools. He detailed ongoing efforts to establish 116 schools in tea garden areas, with another 100 schools under construction, and plans to upgrade high schools to include higher secondary classes.
Sealing the historic unification of SEBA (since 1964) and AHSEC (since 1984) into ASSEB, Minister Pegu declared, "Today marks a significant milestone in Assam’s school education history."
