Heartfelt Apology: Chin National Front Expresses Deep Regret to Mizoram Village for Teenagers’ Abduction by Militants
AIZAWL: CNF Issues Apology to Heal Relations with Zokhawthar Community
In a bid to mend strained relations with the local populace, the Chin National Front (CNF) has formally apologized to the Village Council President (VCP) of Zokhawthar, Mizoram, following a recent abduction incident. The apology comes after two teenage boys were kidnapped and maltreated by insurgents from the Chin Defense Force (CDF) Hualngoram faction earlier this month.
Dr. Sui Khar, Vice Chairman of CNF, addressed Zokhawthar’s VCP in a letter, expressing deep remorse over the actions of the CDF militants. “We are appalled by the incident where two locals were detained and severely mistreated by CDF Hualngoram members. The blame falls squarely on them,” Dr. Khar wrote, acknowledging the delayed release of the boys and pledging that such incidents would not recur.
The tragic event took place on September 1, 2024, when five boys from Zokhawthar went on an outing to Rih Dil Lake, near the India-Myanmar border. The excursion turned disastrous when the group was intercepted by CDF militants over an unresolved dispute. While three boys escaped, two were kidnapped and subjected to six days of brutal treatment, including torture.
The abduction sparked outrage in Zokhawthar and beyond, with residents lamenting that the Mizoram community had always provided refuge to the Chin people during conflicts. The boys were finally released on September 6, 2024, after intense negotiations involving the Assam Rifles and the Chin National Army, both advocating for peace and reconciliation.
Dr. Khar’s emotional letter concluded with a plea for forgiveness and a firm commitment to rebuild frayed trust. He underscored the vital relationship between the Chin people and Mizoram, one based on mutual respect and shared history.
As the community begins to heal, the CNF hopes that its swift apology and promise of reform will restore harmony in Zokhawthar. However, many locals remain vigilant to ensure such violent incidents do not recur.
