Assam Farmer’s Backyard Transforms into Lush Exotic Fruit Farm
Dhubri, Sept 9: Amid the verdant landscapes of Assam’s Kokrajhar district, a 54-year-old resident named Sujit Kumar Mushahary has crafted an inspiring story of resilience and innovation. Hailing from the village of Bashbari, close to Dhubri District, Mushahary’s endeavor has become a beacon of hope and motivation across both districts.
Despite holding a graduate degree, Mushahary has carved out a niche for himself by transforming his modest backyard into a thriving dragon fruit farm. His journey into agriculture was kindled by a Bangladeshi farmer who had studied dragon fruit cultivation in China. Financial constraints during the pandemic initially delayed his plans, but with unwavering support from his wife, Sylvareene, a mother of five, he overcame these hurdles.
In 2022, Mushahary planted approximately 400 saplings of dragon fruit, using innovative table-top farming methods. The dragon fruit, a tropical delicacy originating from the Hylocereus cactus native to Mexico and Central America, is celebrated for its vibrant color and nutritional benefits. Alongside dragon fruit, he also cultivated vanilla plants and various vegetables, diversifying his farm’s produce.
The successful harvest of his first crop in 2023 emboldened Mushahary to expand his agricultural pursuits. He planted an additional 1,200 saplings utilizing the Trellis method, further scaling his operations. His farm has not only enhanced his livelihood but also galvanized his community, sparking curiosity and admiration throughout the BTAD region, particularly in Dhubri district.
Mushahary’s determined journey from financial struggle to agricultural triumph exemplifies how innovative farming techniques and sheer tenacity can transform lives.
