Devastating Landslide on NH-29 Claims Six Lives in Nagaland
On September 3rd, a significant landslide struck the NH-29 near Pherima village, causing extensive damage and the tragic loss of six lives. The disaster, precipitated by a severe thunderstorm, occurred between 10:00-10:30 PM, washing debris and mudslides from a nearby stream onto the highway.
The landslide’s sudden impact resulted in the destruction of several vehicles and houses. Eyewitnesses recounted how swiftly the calamity unfolded, with a truck driver describing the event as "very scary" as his cement-laden vehicle became immobile due to the obstruction. Numerous trucks were stranded along the highway, with three trucks from Indian Oil Corporation caught in the debris, causing significant logistical delays.
The Head Gaonbura (GB) of Pherima village, Vikato Ayemi, noted that this was an unprecedented event in their area. He attributed the flood’s severity to boulders and debris clogging the culvert drainage. Efforts to clear the debris were delayed, leading Ayemi to urge NHIDCL and relevant authorities to widen the culverts to prevent future incidents.
In response to the disaster, village youth, police personnel, and disaster response forces worked tirelessly to recover the bodies of the deceased. Seventeen vehicles were reported damaged, including two swept away by floodwaters, while four houses, including roadside diners and a temporary hut, suffered partial or complete destruction. Authorities were actively clearing another landslide further up the road, utilizing six to seven machines.
A travel advisory was issued, directing the use of alternate routes between 7th Mile NH 29 Sukhovi-Mhainamtsi-Jharnapani and New Chümoukedima to Old Chümoukedima. Official reports confirmed the deaths of Kriesangulie, Samir Dutta, Daju, Bijay, Sopon Biswas, and Sonhie. The damage included at least five trucks, eleven light motor vehicles, and a two-wheeler.
Officials, including Chümoukedima DC Polen John and other dignitaries, conducted an on-site inspection of the affected area, signaling an expedited recovery and prevention plan to avert future tragedies.
