Minister Sudhangshu Das Faces Protest Over Controversial Social Media Post
Agartala, 4th September 2024: Minister Sudhangshu Das drew widespread criticism and protests after posting controversial remarks on social media. On Wednesday morning, as he headed to the Assembly session, his car was intercepted by protestors from the state Youth Congress and NSUI. The demonstrators, waving black flags, demanded his immediate resignation.
The situation escalated when Minister Das exited his vehicle to confront the protesters. Pradesh Youth Congress President Neel Kamal Saha challenged the minister about the provocative nature of his post, accusing him of trying to disrupt the state’s peace. Das defended himself, questioning whether any violence had actually occurred as a result. Saha, however, insisted that the minister’s intent alone warranted concern.
The argument intensified as Minister Das highlighted issues involving Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir and Kerala, and questioned the silence over controversial remarks by Kolkata Mayor Farid Hakim. Saha pushed back, urging the focus to remain on Tripura’s peace and stability.
Further controversy arose when Das admitted to deleting his post following his party’s instructions, which Saha suggested was acknowledgment of its inflammatory nature. The minister then shifted the discussion to the topic of Rohingya immigrants and criticized the government’s border security measures. The exchange ended with Minister Das losing his temper, labeling the protest as a politically motivated move by the Congress party. He subsequently returned to his vehicle and went to the Assembly.
After the incident, Youth Congress President Neel Kamal Saha addressed the media, accusing the BJP of trying to destabilize the state. He reiterated the call for Das’s resignation, citing the minister’s provocative post as the primary reason for the unrest. The protest featured numerous Youth Congress and NSUI leaders, highlighting the escalating political tension around the issue.
