Wokha Citizens Rally Against Assaults and Illegal Taxation
Morung Express News | Wokha | September 2
On September 2, citizens of Wokha town held a public rally at Police Point to protest against physical assaults, illegal taxation, and intimidation faced by the common people. The event, organized by the Lotha Youth Hoho under the Lotha Hoho’s aegis, was triggered by the recent physical assault and attempted murder of Pastor Rhanlamo Kikon by a cadre of NSCN-K (Khango).
Limhathung N Yanthan, President of Lotha Youth Hoho, commended the community for their strong turnout. He decried the attack on Pastor Kikon as an unwarranted and attempted murder, and condemned illegal taxation and extortion. He emphasized that the Lothas would not support any faction involved in such activities.
Additionally, Yanthan called on Heads of Departments (HODs) in Wokha District to ensure their presence in their offices to avoid causing inconvenience to the public. Tsupon Murry, Lotha Hoho General Secretary, stressed the rally’s role as a preventative measure against future incidents and criticized Naga nationalist groups for prioritizing selfish gains.
KN Mhonthung Lotha, Chairman of Kohima Lotha Hoho, urged unity among Naga factions and criticized the political movement’s corruption. He emphasized the need for unity to achieve the community’s aspirations, particularly highlighting the frustrations of the younger generation due to employment saturation and business-related intimidation.
Various leaders, including Lirhonthung E Kithan, President of the Lotha Students’ Union, called for unified action against injustices and urged the community to stand together for justice and community values. Other prominent leaders and representatives voiced their condemnations and urged unity.
The rally saw widespread participation from Wokha district citizens, leaders, civil society organizations, and student groups, with 16 schools and 2 colleges taking part. The event concluded peacefully with proper police security.
Subsequently, a memorandum was submitted to the Governor of Nagaland, outlining the community’s resolutions, including conditions for the release of the accused and non-cooperation with factions involved in intimidation or attacks against the Lotha community.
