Union Cabinet Approves Seven New Agricultural Schemes with Rs 14,000 Crore Outlay
The Union Cabinet on Monday unveiled seven ambitious schemes amounting to nearly Rs 14,000 crore for the agriculture and allied sectors. This comprehensive initiative is designed to enhance research, education, climate resilience, and digitization in agriculture, along with fostering the growth of livestock and horticulture. The primary goal is to equip farmers with the tools needed for climate-resistant agriculture.
Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnav highlighted the approval of key programmes, including a Rs 2,817 crore Digital Agriculture Mission and a Rs 3,979 crore scheme for crop science aimed at bolstering food and nutritional security.
These crop science initiatives are built on six pillars: research and education, plant genetic resource management, genetic improvement for crops, pulse and oilseed crop enhancement, research on beneficial insects and microbes, and commercialization of crops.
Additionally, the Cabinet sanctioned Rs 2,291 crore to reinforce agricultural education, management, and social sciences under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, aligning with the New Education Policy 2020. This includes the adoption of advanced technologies such as AI, big data, and remote sensing.
The Digital Agriculture Mission, with an investment of Rs 2,817 crore, focuses on the foundational elements of Agri Stack and Krishi Decision Support System.
A separate Rs 1,702 crore scheme was approved for sustainable livestock health and production, targeting increased farmer income through improved animal health management, veterinary education, dairy production, genetic resource management, and nutrition.
Furthermore, the Cabinet introduced a Rs 860 crore initiative for horticulture development, encompassing a variety of crops and aiming to boost farmer income from horticulture plants.
Additional approvals included a Rs 1,202 crore scheme for strengthening the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and a Rs 1,115 crore scheme for Natural Resource Management. Over 700 KVKs will benefit from these initiatives, enhancing agricultural research and sustainability across the country.
