Minister and Mayor Proactively Ensure Community Safety with Inspiring Flood Mitigation Inspection
Ministers Inspect Monsoon Preparedness and Development Projects in North Chennai
On Monday, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments P.K. Sekar Babu, along with Mayor R. Priya, conducted inspections to oversee ongoing Northeast monsoon preparedness and various development projects under the ‘Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam’ (North Chennai Development Plan). They were accompanied by several officials during the inspections.
Mayor Priya reviewed the deployment of Robotic Multi-Purpose Excavators for cleaning Padi and Gandhi Nagar drains. She noted that the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has acquired two additional excavators, costing ₹22.80 crore, aimed at removing water hyacinth, waste, and silt from city waterbodies. Additionally, desilting work is underway in the Captain Cotton canal using a rented machine from Gujarat.
The civic body’s arsenal for monsoon preparedness includes two amphibian vehicles, three mini amphibian machines, seven high-capacity water-suction jetting machines with recycling facilities, and nine hydraulic tree-cutting machines.
Minister Sekar Babu also reviewed key infrastructure projects managed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). These projects include a ₹6.26 crore upgrade of Kolathur lake, the construction of a new ₹12 crore dialysis center in Kolathur, and the development of a ₹2.5 crore co-working space. Additionally, the State government is constructing 700 high-rise apartments in Adyar and 504 apartments in George Town.
The officials inspected the desilting works carried out using mini amphibian machines and robotic multi-purpose excavators across various locations, including Ward 170 near Adyar River, Ward 191 in Perungudi zone, Ward 27 in Madhavaram zone, and Ward 72 in Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar zone near Railway Bridge at Reddy Kuppam drain.
Also present during the inspections were Housing and Urban Development Department Principal Secretary Kakarla Usha, CMDA Member Secretary Anshul Mishra, Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board Managing Director S. Prabhakar, GCC Regional Deputy Commissioners K.J. Praveen Kumar (Central) and Katta Ravi Teja (North), GCC Standing Committee Chairperson (Public Health) K. Shanthakumar, among other officials.
