India Surges as a Powerful Tech Leader: Dominating AI Behind Only US and China | Tech News
India Ascends in Global Research Rankings, Now Among Top Five in 45 Critical Technologies

New Delhi: India continues its remarkable rise in the global research arena, now ranking among the top five countries in 45 out of 64 critical technologies, revealed the latest Critical Technology Tracker report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. This is a notable improvement from its position last year when it was ranked in the top five of 37 technologies. Significantly, India has clinched the second spot in seven critical technologies.
India’s ascent in the field hasn’t gone unnoticed, especially as it surpassed the United States in two emerging technological domains: biological manufacturing and distributed ledger technology, becoming a formidable player in these sectors.
In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), India stands just behind the US and China in several major segments, such as advanced data analytics, AI algorithms, hardware accelerators, machine learning, advanced integrated circuit design and fabrication, natural language processing, and adversarial AI.
This progress marks a stark contrast from the period of 2003–2007 when India ranked in the top five for only four technologies. The tracker report, which spans data from 2003 to 2023, evaluates high-impact research—defined as the top 10 percent of the most-cited papers—to measure a country’s research performance, strategic objectives, and future technological capabilities across a wide array of fields, including space, defense, energy, environment, AI, robotics, biotechnology, cybersecurity, advanced computing, advanced materials, and quantum technology.
Globally, China leads in an overwhelming 57 out of 64 technologies. Meanwhile, the US, which dominated in 60 fields between 2003 and 2007, now retains the top position in just seven areas, including quantum computing and vaccine development. The UK and European Union have also shown declines in their standings.
Despite the marked improvements, the report points out a significant shortfall in India’s research landscape: the absence of standout research institutions. Only five Indian institutions rank in the top five across the 64 technologies over the past two decades. This fragmentation is seen as a limitation to attracting foreign research talent and retaining domestic scientists and technologists.
While India has not yet emerged as a leader in any critical technology, it is now second in areas like high-specific machine processes, advanced composite materials, mesh and infrastructure-independent networks, smart materials, and biofuel. Additionally, it holds third place in numerous vital technologies, including electronic warfare, autonomous underwater vehicles, sonar and acoustic sensors, photonic sensors, post-quantum cryptography, photovoltaics, nuclear waste management, supercapacitors, and advanced aircraft engines.
For further updates, stay tuned.
