Sri Lankan Nationals Suspected of Robbing Nagapattinam Fishermen Mid-Sea
Nagapattinam: In a chilling mid-sea encounter, a group of seven individuals, suspected to be Sri Lankan nationals, allegedly robbed four fishermen from Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, August 28, 2024, as the fishermen were plying their trade in international waters.
According to sources in the Coastal Security Group, the fishermen—N. Shanmugam, 50, N. Chandran, 61, V. Arumugam, 47, and V. Madurai Veeran, 35—departed from Serudhur on an unregistered fibre boat on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Approximately 10 nautical miles east of Kodiakarai, they were confronted by seven individuals aboard two boats.
The assailants reportedly boarded the fishermen’s vessel and made away with a 500 kg fishing net, a GPS device, and two mobile phones. The fishermen returned to shore on Thursday morning, August 29, 2024, and immediately reported the incident to Coastal Security Group officials.
This marks the second such incident reported within the week, raising concerns about the safety of local fishermen operating in these waters. Authorities are intensifying surveillance and urging fishermen to remain vigilant while at sea.
The Coastal Security Group has launched an investigation to apprehend the culprits and ensure the safety of the region’s fishing community.
