Outrage Erupts: AASU Unites in Fierce Protest Against APDCL Smart Meter Charges
AASU Protests Against Exorbitant Smart Meter Charges in Dibrugarh
Dibrugarh, Assam: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a fervent protest in Dibrugarh on Tuesday, voicing strong opposition to the high charges imposed by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) through its new smart meter system.
In a symbolic act of defiance, the students’ union organized a mock funeral procession for the power minister, vividly portraying their discontent with the government’s handling of the issue. “The smart meters are nothing short of a financial burden on the people of Assam,” stated an AASU spokesperson. “They charge exorbitant rates, leaving us with no choice but to protest against this injustice.”
Protesters, equipped with posters and placards, chanted slogans demanding the immediate removal of the smart meters and the reinstatement of fair and affordable electricity tariffs. “We demand uninterrupted and reliable power supply without the added burden of excessive charges,” reiterated the AASU leader. “The people of Assam cannot be exploited in the name of modernization.”
Assam is one among several states that have adopted the prepaid digital smart meter system as part of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The APDCL is tasked with the implementation and oversight of this system, which has been divided into six packages for efficient execution.
This protest underscores the rising discontent among Assam’s citizens regarding the financial strain imposed by the smart meters, illustrating the broader tensions between modernization initiatives and their practical impact on daily life.
