Vishal Kaith’s Heroic Performance Propels Mohun Bagan to Dramatic Durand Cup 2024 Final Victory Over Bengaluru FC
Mohun Bagan Super Giant made a dramatic comeback to edge past Bengaluru FC in the Durand Cup 2024 semifinals, held at the Salt Lake Stadium. Trailing by two goals, Mohun Bagan managed to equalize 2-2 within regulation time and then secured a 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout. This thrilling encounter saw both teams exhibit aggressive attacking strategies.
Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith was the hero for Mohun Bagan, replicating his quarterfinal performance by blocking the last two penalty attempts from Bengaluru’s Halicharan Narzary and Aleksandar Jovanovic. This crucial intervention propelled Mohun Bagan to their 30th final in Asia’s oldest football tournament.
Bengaluru FC initially led through Sunil Chhetri’s penalty in the 43rd minute after Liston Colaco fouled Vinith Venkatesh. Chhetri missed an early chance in the 12th minute, thanks to Kaith’s alertness. After the break, Bengaluru doubled their lead when Jorge Pereyra Diaz assisted Venkatesh for an easy tap-in.
Mohun Bagan intensified their efforts and found success when Rahul Bheke’s foul on Manvir Singh resulted in a penalty, converted by Dimitri Petratos in the 68th minute. Anirudh Thapa then equalized in the 84th minute with a powerful strike, bringing the team back into contention.
In the penalty shootout, Jason Cummings, Manvir Singh, Liston Colaco, and Dimitri Petratos scored for Mohun Bagan, while Edgar Mendez, Rahul Bheke, and Pedro Capo converted for Bengaluru FC. Bengaluru’s keeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu saved Mohun Bagan’s final penalty shot by Greg Stewart, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.
Mohun Bagan will now face NorthEast United FC, who defeated Shillong Lajong 3-0 in the first semifinal, in the final scheduled for August 31.
