Heartbreaking Plea: 14-Year-Old Dhing Gangrape Victim’s Cry for Understanding Just Days Before Tragedy
In a harrowing incident that has shocked the state of Assam, a 14-year-old girl, referred to as Maina (name changed), was brutally gang-raped on August 22 in Dhing, just half a kilometer from her home. The assault occurred while Maina was cycling home from her tuition classes alone due to a lack of available e-rickshaw and her aunt being preoccupied. Maina, who harbored dreams of becoming a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was left injured and unconscious in a nearby jungle. She was discovered by locals and quickly transported to a hospital, later being shifted to the Nagaon Medical College for further treatment.
The incident has left Maina’s family reeling. Her aunt, who has been her primary caregiver and financial support, expressed profound sorrow and guilt, recounting that Maina had naively asked about rape just two days prior after hearing about a similar case in Kolkata. Her father, unable to provide much support from Guwahati, is heartbroken seeing his daughter in such a state of trauma.
The assault has sparked widespread anger and protests throughout Assam, with community members demanding justice. Maina’s family has called for severe punishment for the assailants, including capital punishment. The case has also prompted appeals to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for support in ensuring Maina’s education and protection.
Adding to the turmoil, one of the accused, Tafazul Islam, died on August 24 while attempting to flee from police. The search for the other two culprits continues.
This tragic event has not only devastated Maina’s family but has also ignited a broader discourse on the safety of women and children in the region. The community’s demand for justice and reform remains fervent as they rally for a safer environment for all.
