Urgent: Northeast Council Plenary Heartbreakingly Postponed Amid Devastating Tripura Floods
Northeast Council’s Plenary Meeting in Agartala Postponed Due to Tripura Floods
Agartala: The Northeast Council’s Plenary Meeting, initially slated for August 31 and September 1 in Agartala, has been postponed owing to the severe flooding that has beset Tripura.
The Council announced the postponement on social media platform X, attributing the delay to “unavoidable circumstances.” The statement read, “The Plenary Meeting Scheduled in Agartala Postponed. The Plenary meet scheduled to be held in Agartala, Tripura is postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. New dates will be announced in due course.”
This high-level meeting was to be overseen by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, with participation from all Chief Ministers and Governors of the Northeastern states.
Since August 19, heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding in Tripura, displacing over 60,000 residents who are now taking refuge in more than 400 relief camps. The prolonged deluge has severely impacted daily life and infrastructure, necessitating the rescheduling of the council’s significant gathering.
