Devastating Tripura Floods Cause Rs 5,000 Crore Damage, Displacing 1.28 Lakh and Claiming 24 Lives

Tripura has been facing severe flooding since August 19, resulting in extensive damage estimated at around Rs 5,000 crore. Approximately 1.28 lakh people are seeking refuge in relief camps, and the flood has claimed 24 lives. There have also been reports of diarrhea and other waterborne diseases.

Addressing a press conference on August 23, Tripura Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey highlighted that the districts of Gomati, South, Unakoti, and West are the worst affected. Although rainfall reduced in the last 24 hours, Chief Minister Manik Saha is actively monitoring the situation, having conducted an aerial survey. The water levels have largely receded below the danger mark, except for the Gomati River in Sonamura under Sepahijala district.

Pandey reported that 558 relief camps have been established, providing shelter to those displaced. Essential services, including medical care and food supplies, are being offered at these camps. The death toll includes 2 in Gomati, 15 in South, 2 in West, 3 in Sepahijala, and one each in Unakoti and Khowai districts.

The flooding has extensively damaged roads, power infrastructure, agriculture, and livestock. Ongoing rescue operations continue in the worst-hit Gomati and South districts, supported by six NDRF and six SDRF teams along with helicopter services. Over 11,000 food packets have been distributed to the victims.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light to moderate rainfall, with potential heavy rain over the next 3 to 4 days. As a precaution, 12 NDRF and 32 SDRF teams are on standby.

PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte reported a 75-meter crack in National Highway 08, disrupting heavy vehicle movement. Additionally, a 1.2 km landslide has further affected connectivity, with restoration efforts underway.

Health Secretary Kiran Gitte noted instances of waterborne diseases, with special medical camps arranged statewide. Power Secretary Abhishek Singh reported damage to over 700 km of power lines and submerged substations. Restoration efforts include using 122 tankers for water distribution alongside bottled water supplies.
