Urgent Appeal: Doctors’ Protests Disrupt Arunachal Healthcare Seeking Justice for Kolkata Trainee Amid Crisis
Healthcare services were significantly disrupted in Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday as doctors took part in a nationwide protest demanding justice for the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Physicians at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences in Naharlagun held a demonstration outside the Emergency and Trauma Department, holding placards and chanting slogans. They called for justice for the victim and her family, emphasizing the tragic impact of the crime on the medical community.
An anonymous doctor from the institute confirmed the suspension of all routine services. At Ramakrishna Mission Hospital in Itanagar, similar actions were taken. Swami Vedasarananda, the hospital’s secretary, announced the suspension of outpatient services and elective surgeries for 24 hours, starting from 6 am, while essential services remained operational.
The protest extended to Aalo General Hospital in West Siang district and Bakin Pertin General Hospital in Pasighat, where doctors also paused routine operations. Medical professionals at Aalo voiced their demand for security measures for both government and private doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers. They urged the government to implement 24×7 protection.
On Friday, the Indian Medical Association’s Arunachal Pradesh branch called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators, a speedy trial, and the harshest punishment possible. Additionally, they advocated for the introduction of a central law to safeguard doctors and healthcare personnel.
This protest signifies a critical moment of solidarity and the urgent need for enhanced safety and justice measures within the healthcare system. The medical fraternity’s outcry underscores the broader implications of such heinous crimes on health services and professionals across the nation.
