Rishab Shetty’s “Kantara” and Manoj Bajpayee’s “Gulmohar” took center stage at the 70th National Film Awards, announced on Friday, August 16. Dominating the 2024 accolades, “Kantara” clinched the Best Picture award, while Rishab Shetty was honored as Best Actor for his role in the film. Yash’s blockbuster “KGF: Chapter 2” won Best Kannada Film, and “Gulmohar” secured the Best Hindi Film award.
Among the individual achievements, Nithya Menon and Maansi Parekh shared the Best Actress award, while Best Director went to Sooraj R. Barjatya for “Uunchai.” In music, Pritam was named Best Music Director for his work in “Brahmastra,” with AR Rahman receiving the Best Background Music award for “Ponniyin Selvan 2.” Anand Krishnamurthy of “PS 2” won Best Sound Design, and Arijit Singh was honored as Best Male Playback Singer for “Brahmastra.” The intricate visual effects of “Brahmastra” also earned it the Best VFX Award.
Other notable winners included “Aattam” for Best Feature Film, Neena Gupta as Best Supporting Actress, Pawan Malhotra as Best Supporting Actor, and Fouja, Pramod Kumar as Best Debut. “Kartikeya 2” was named Best Telugu Film, “Ponniyin Selvan – Part 1” won Best Tamil Film, and “Baaghi Di Dhee” secured Best Punjabi Film. The Best Odia Film award went to “Daman,” while “Soudi Velakka CC.225/2009” and “Vaalvi” won for Best Malayalam and Best Marathi Films, respectively.
Special mentions were given to Manoj Bajpayee for his performance in “Gulmohar” and Sanjoy Salil Chowdhury for “Kalikhan.” “KGF: Chapter 2” also nabbed Best Action Direction, with Best Choreography going to “Tiruchitrabalam.” The awards for Best Lyrics and Best Makeup were won by “Fouja” and “Aparajito,” respectively, while Best Costumes went to “Kutchh Express.”
In technical categories, “Aparajito” also shone with Best Production Design, and “Aattam” took home Best Editing and Best Screenplay. “Ponniyin Selvan – Part 1” won for Best Sound Design and Best Cinematography, while “Gulmohar” picked up Best Dialogues.
The 2024 National Film Awards celebrated cinematic excellence across a diverse range of categories, highlighting the best talent and technical prowess in the Indian film industry.
