Heroic Officer Aids Daring Escape: Inside the Thrilling Journey of a Dorbesh Exec and BD Cricket Leader to Dubai
Bangladesh’s former industry and investment advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Salman F Rahman, was apprehended by law enforcement agencies on August 14. Prior to his capture, Rahman, also known by the moniker Dorbesh, orchestrated a last-minute escape plan for his close aide, Ismail Haidar Malik.
On August 6, Rahman reached out to trusted army officers, seeking assistance in evacuating Malik, who was the General Manager at Beximco Pharma and a Director at the Bangladesh Cricket Control Board. Malik, who handled finances at Beximco Pharma, was often referred to as “Dorbesh and Papon’s cashier” within Salman Rahman’s business circle. Papon is the nickname for Nazrul Hassan, a former Awami League MP and a cricket administrator who also served as Youth and Sports Minister in Hasina’s government.
To facilitate Malik’s escape from the violence-ridden country, Rahman contacted officers from the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Bangladesh’s formidable intelligence agency. As student protests escalated in Dhaka, Malik made his way to Shah Jalal International Airport by August 8. Two days before his arrival at the airport, Malik was advised by DGFI’s Detachment Commander, Brigadier Mizan, to fabricate an invitation from the International Cricket Council, purportedly for a meeting in Dubai. This fake invitation was intended to ease Malik’s passage through airport immigration.
Malik then disseminated WhatsApp messages featuring the fake invitation to influential contacts in Dhaka, including Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan. When questioned at the immigration counter, officers consulted Brigadier Mizan, who authorized Malik’s passage. Northeast News has reliably learned that elements within the DGFI facilitated the escape of several Awami League members and regime beneficiaries beyond Bangladesh’s borders. Sources also revealed that Major General Mahbubur Rashid, commanding the Jessore-based 55th Infantry Division, assisted some Awami League members in crossing over to India.
