Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Triumphs: Samsung Struggles to Keep Up in Foldable Phone Innovation Race
Google has just concluded its Pixel 9 series event, with the standout being the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Despite only being Google’s second foldable attempt, it competes fiercely with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6, now in its sixth generation.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold boasts superior hardware, including better aspect ratios for its displays. Its 6.3-inch cover display features a standard 20:9 aspect ratio and 1080p resolution, contrasting the narrower and lower-resolution screen of the Galaxy Z Fold6. Additionally, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s internal display is larger and more suitable for multitasking.
Google has also managed to produce a slimmer foldable device, with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold measuring just 10.5mm when folded, thinner than both the Galaxy Z Fold6 and the OnePlus Open. However, the Galaxy Z Fold6 is lighter, a factor some users might appreciate.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold includes 16 GB of RAM compared to the Galaxy Z Fold6’s 12 GB, allowing for better multitasking. While Samsung’s 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset might edge out Google’s Tensor G4 in raw performance, the Pixel still holds its own in terms of overall responsiveness.
Camera-wise, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold offers a superior zoom (112mm vs. 66mm) and autofocus on its ultrawide camera, despite the Galaxy Z Fold6 having a slightly larger main sensor. The Pixel also features a marginally larger 4,650mAh battery, though actual battery life remains to be tested.
While the Pixel 9 Pro Fold presents a formidable challenge, the Galaxy Z Fold6 is likely to dominate sales, benefiting from its more polished multitasking, S Pen support, and broader availability. Nevertheless, Google’s impressive entry signals an intensifying competition in the foldable market that Samsung must heed.
